Nachlässigkeit... -- neglection...

Goodness, I’ve been neglectful lately concerning my blog. Here’s – finally – my update on this cruel exam I took a month ago (I assume, I needed some distance from this torture).

For all you out there who have never heard of anything like the German tax adviser exam, here’s a few coordinates on this special harassment: The entire exam comprises of three written exams, each six hours long, on 7/8/9 October 2008 and a four-hour oral exam in spring 2009 if I got a D- (or better) as average grade of all three written tests. To take the exam, I had ten big binders full of summaries regarding all kinds of tax laws. The average of the three written exams and the oral exam each count 50%. In general, only some 40% of the annual examinees pass the tax adviser exam. However, in 2007 about 60% and in 2006 some 70% passed it. Our teachers said that this might be a reason for the 2008 exam to be extraordinarily hard… what have I done to ALWAYS deserve such nuisance?

So, here comes my update on the written tests:
On the first day, the test comprises of three parts: General fiscal code, inheritance tax and VAT. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get done. Germany’s inheritance tax is partly unconstitutional, so our teachers told us that it might not even be part of the first test … but: Oh no – it was a HUGE part!!

The second day (income taxes) went much better. I have to admit that I was so happy that I’m in the mergers & acquisitions tax department because we had to examine a paragraph which I had to deal with quite often at work. But then I blew it again with a topic which I only looked over once in the entire three and a half month of studies… Well, at least I went home with my head held high, thinking: “If tomorrow will work out like today, I might have a chance to compensate the first day!”

But then I woke up on the last day with an awful headache. Those headaches are notorious for the southern part of Germany. We have this special weather here called “foehn”. That’s when warm air is blown from Italy over the Alps to southern Germany. On the one hand, you can see an impressive panorama of the Alps on those days but on the other hand lots of people also get a so called “foehn disorder” with headaches, nausea and dizziness. It’s really not funny for me – I love Italian food, but hell, I feel horrible whenever we get that Italian air! ;-) So, I took an ibuprofen along with my breakfast and happily felt better soon. Unfortunately, it started all again just half an hour after I started taking the test (in tax accounting, that was) – Argh!! Without reconsidering, I just took the second ibuprofen and that was the worst idea. After some 20 minutes I felt dizzy, my hands were shaking and my cardiovascular system went almost completely down. You wouldn’t guess: I wasn’t able to concentrate and my sense of time was lost… I was on an overdose of ibuprofen!! :-( I didn’t have a choice; I had to sit it out. So, I felt awful for about two hours which was - of course - not good at all, since I had to make up for the first test. Then I was doing pretty much OK again and tried to make up for as much as possible but I didn't get very far because I failed on the last part of this exam, taxes on reorganisations (which should be my first preference as I’m daily working with reorganisations and acquisitions). But who would’ve thought that they start asking questions like “your client wants to reorganise – now, suggest whatever your today’s gusto is and then carry it out”… I was lost! Usually, there are very precise questions in the tests and not any essays like this to write. Well, I was confused and not able to think it all through, so my suggestions was to incorporate PARTNERSHIPS… with just ONE PARTNER… who would’ve come up with THAT idea?? Eve on ibuprofen, I suppose…

And then it was all over… I was so relieved, I forgot about all the misery the minute I walked out of the room!

On Thursday night, my honey Rob took me out for dinner. I was the one to chose and as I have been on a “canned-soup-and-sausage-diet” for the last weeks before the exam, I was craving for a big, hearty and monster-yummy STEAK - that was soooo delicious!!!

Now, I have to wait till after Christmas for the results – they’re taking their time. :-( Luckily, I’m quite busy at work. That’s a good distraction!!!

At this point I’d like to say “sorry” to everyone I’ve been neglecting or stressing out: I was in a state of emergency for the past months :-(

Wow, honey, I don't know if it could get worse than that!! This sounds worse than nursing school. I am so proud of you to laugh at yourself (cry in private, right?) and to accomplish so much. You are an incredibly, wonderbar, loving, intelligent daughter. I hope that I will soon be saying Congratulations!!
